The Athabasca Tar Sands are a massive source of oil located beneath 4.3 million hectares of Alberta boreal forest. Sadly, the process of extracting the oil from the sand and clay creates large amounts of water pollution and greenhouse gases. This documentary uses sweeping aerial photography of the tar sands to showcase the environmental issues at stake in the exploitation of this rich natural resource. Filmmaker Peter Mettler was the cinematographer on "Manufactured Landscapes", the acclaimed documentary on the photography of Edward Burtynsky. VIFF selection. --SD
