It's been a long time coming. This undisputed film classic has been out of print for nearly a decade, and back then it was only on VHS tape. Now it finally arrives meticulously remastered for DVD.

In 1951, director John Huston took Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn and a large film crew on location in central Africa to film this adaptation of C.S. Forester's novel, "The African Queen". (And to do a little big-game hunting as long as he was in the neighbourhood). Hepburn is Rose Sayer, a teetotalling missionary whose brother is killed when the Germans invade the region during World War I. For help she turns to the boat captain who regularly delivers them supplies, the gin-soaked Charlie Allnut (Bogart). Negotiating dangerous rapids and serious personal conflicts, Rose and Charlie bicker constantly aboard The African Queen as they travel to a fateful rendezvous with a German gunboat.

Bogart won his only Oscar for his performance in this film; it was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director. Clint Eastwood's film, "White Hunter, Black Heart" is a thinly-disguised portrayal of the on-location adventures that took place during the filming of "The African Queen". --EH
